Maher Arar, a Canadian citizen deported by the US to Jordan and then Syria after entering the US en route to Montreal, tells his story in the National Post. Pretty appalling stuff.

The Center for Constitutional Rights demands a criminal investigation. I agree. Heads need to roll for this one.

I don't doubt that the INS officials knew exactly what they were doing to Arar, subjecting him to torture with no trial or recourse.

CIA knowingly sends people to be tortured in Syria

A GOP Senator on the Intelligence Committee today during some debate carried by CSPAN actually implied that the Clinton administration is partly to blaim for 9-11 since they ahd a policy that prevented the CIA from obtaining intelligence from sources known to employ torture.

Something to the effect of [paraphrasing] "if only they hadn't instituted this 'politically correct' policy, perhaps we would have obtained more useful intelligence."

What country do we live in? What year is it - 1984?
