Submission + - Home Built Turning Machine 1

stronghawk writes: The creator of the Nickel-O-Matic is back at it and built a Turning Machine from a Parallax Propeller chip based controller, motors, a dry-erase marker and a non-infinite supply of shiny 35mm leader film. From his FAQ: "While thinking about Turing machines I found that no one had ever actually built one, at least not one that looked like Turing's original concept (if someone does know of one, please let me know). There have been a few other physical Turing machines like the Logo of Doom, but none were immediately recognizable as Turing machines. As I am always looking for a new challenge, I set out to build what you see here."

Athena's Free Firewall Browser 23

athenasec writes "Firewall Browser is a free configuration analyzer (download here), released by Athena Security, which works on Cisco, Check Point, and Netscreen firewalls for searching rulebases based on address or service ranges — the way change requests are actually made. The tool is available as a free download with no limitations, user license restrictions, or registration hurdles. Users can slice and dice any firewall-related question about the network, service objects, and security rules for a multi-vendor environment from a single flexible interface. There is also this how-to guide for applying the tool to day-to-day operational tasks."

In a Life magazine article on AI from the early 70's Marvin Minsky said, "In from three to eight years we will have a machine with the general intelligence of an average human being. I mean a machine that will be able to read Shakespeare, grease a car, play office politics, tell a joke, have a fight. At that point the machine will begin to educate itself with fantastic speed. In a few months it will be at genius level and a few months after that its powers will be incalculable." He later said the quote was made up, but if you read the article it's consistent with his other predictions. AI and Brain scientists (probably like a lot of other scientists) are notorious for not being able to predict how long it will take to reach future goals.
