Talk to the CFO, constantly. Establish an on/off-line communication channel. Get the CFO on your side. Many IT departments are seen as cost-centres and viewed as commodity skill set custodial services. Get the CFO buy-in before any executive level presentation. The CEO, a good one, will have already met with the CFO before the meeting and will politely listen to you. If you pay attention you will see the CFO-to-CEO cues.
