AT&T Tells Customers To Upgrade Their Phones To Avoid Losing Voice Calls -- Two Years Early (9to5google.com) 119

There are countless stories of carriers trying to convince people they need a new phone, but this latest example from AT&T is especially worrying. From a report: Through an email going out to thousands of customers, AT&T is warning that those users need to upgrade their phones to avoid losing the ability to make voice calls. The problem? That won't happen for nearly two years. An email is being sent out to customers with a statement in bold that "your device is not compatible with the new network." This is referring to AT&T's plan to shut down its 3G network, still used by some devices for voice calls and data. When that happens, only phones that support VoLTE (voice over LTE) will be allowed on the network. AT&T's email lets customers know that their current phone isn't compatible with VoLTE, but without explaining that explicitly or, more importantly, mentioning that their phone will continue to work until February 2022!

NASA Switches Curiosity Rover To Backup Computer Following Glitch (extremetech.com) 78

NASA has switched its Curiosity rover over to its backup computer system after the main system started experiencing errors last month. "Many NASA spacecraft and surface missions have redundant systems built-in," reports ExtremeTech. "Once they've launched from Earth, there's no way to repair damage to critical systems, so it makes sense to double-up on the vital components. That includes Curiosity's computers, which were designed specifically for the harsh environment on Mars." From the report: The rover has a pair of identical brains running a 5-watt RAD750 CPU. This chip is part of the PowerPC 750 family, but it has been custom designed to survive high-radiation environments as you'd find on Mars or in deep space. These radiation-hardened CPUs cost $200,000 each, and NASA equipped the rover with two of them. Each computer also has 256 kB of EEPROM, 256 MB of DRAM, and 2 GB of flash memory. They run identical VxWorks real-time operating systems. When Curiosity landed on Mars in 2012, it used the "Side-A" computer. However, just a year later in 2013 (Sol 200), the computer failed due to corrupted memory. The rover got stuck in a bootloop, which prevented it from processing commands and drained the batteries. NASA executed a swap to Side-B so engineers could perform remote diagnostics on Side-A. In the following months, NASA confirmed that part of Side-A's memory was unusable and quarantined it. They kept Curiosity on Side-B, though. With Side-B experiencing problems preventing the rover from storing key science and engineering data, NASA switched Curiosity back to Side-A while it investigates the problem, which it can only do when the other computer is active. "NASA hasn't said how much of Side-A's RAM is bad, and it only had 256MB to start, but the team does intend to move Curiosity operations back to Side-B if possible," the report adds. "For now, the mission is functioning normally on Side-A."

I have found that reducing the pointer movement speed has been the most helpful. Most mice tend to move farther in relation to the speed the mouse moves. Tremors tend to cause quick furtive movements which cause the pointer to leap across the screen. By lowering the ratio you can inhibit the worst of the effects of poor movement and tremors. It may mean having to lift the mouse and move it back because there is not enough room to move the pointer across the screen, but that is less frustrating than not being able to hit the spot I am aiming for.

Asteroid 2012 DA14 Approaches 94

Today at about 19:25 UTC (2:25 PM EST), Asteroid 2012 DA14 will make its closest approach to Earth, passing a mere 27,650 kilometers above the surface — closer than our satellites in geosynchronous orbit. NASA is broadcasting a live-steam showing the asteroid from an Observatory, and will have coverage on NASA TV starting about a half-hour before closest approach. The Planetary Society will be broadcasting a live webcast, and Phil Plait will be hosting a Google+ Hangout. NASA has also compiled a nice post filled with information about the asteroid, including trajectory diagrams, animated videos of the path, and answers to question about 2012 DA14. You can also watch it move at 50x actual speed through a telescope. They take pains to note that there is no danger of the asteroid striking the planet today, or any time in the forseeable future. Its next notably close approach in 2046 will only bring it about a million kilometers away. What makes 2012 DA14 significant is that it's rather large — it's 45 meters across and weighs about 130,000 metric tons. It's also moving about 7.8 kilometers per second relative to Earth. "To view the asteroid, you will need a good pair of binoculars, or even better, a moderately powered telescope. During the closest approach, and dependant on local weather, the asteroid will be visible from parts of Europe, Africa and Asia. The asteroid will appear to be moving relatively quickly as it crosses the sky from the south to the north." NASA says this morning's meteor event in Russia was unrelated.

Microsoft Kinect With World of Warcraft 80

An anonymous reader writes "Researchers at the University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies have developed software that enables control of PC video games using the Microsoft Kinect sensor. Their toolkit, known as the Flexible Action and Articulated Skeleton Toolkit (FAAST), emulates custom-configured keyboard controls triggered by body posture and specific gestures. This video shows a user playing the online game World of Warcraft using the Kinect. Potential applications of this technology include video games for motor rehabilitation after stroke and reducing childhood obesity through healthy gaming."

PlayStation App Coming To iOS, Android 47

Sony has announced plans to launch PlayStation-centric apps for iOS 4 and Android devices. While the apps doesn't actually let users play games, it allows them to interact with various PlayStation Network functions. "This includes allowing players to view various trophies they and their friends have won in order to validate their self-worth. Players will also be able to view friends' online status and browse games for the PS3, PS2, and PSP with the app, as well as catch up on news and any relevant hardware announcements. If they see anything they like, the app will integrate with Facebook, Twitter, and e-mail to make for easy sharing." The app will be released for several European countries to start, with more versions and languages to follow.

In the spirit of disclosure, I am affilliated with http://www.fraudeliminator.com/ but I can't help but point out that 80% of Netcraft's toolbar is devoted to promoting themselves and has nothing to do with preventing phishing. They also suggested that costco.com was a phishing site. I admit I like to fish around for new tools and toys there, but so far I got what I paid for. :)

Feedback came in. I received some good suggestions and questions. Questions either reinforce decisions and information already gathered or point out gaps and incongruities in my thinking. Some questions help to shed light in areas that I did not see before. But every question has an answer so far and so far the answers all serve to advance the idea/plan. Here's a conversation I had online with my daughter last night:

Living on the edge, not knowing if I will be able to pay the next months rent and playing music for tip money swirled around in my little brain like two dice and when they rested it came up seven. At least I hope so. You see I got to thinking that if indeed I was homeless and feeding myself by busking and living in my van I could probably travel cross country to a new town where I was more likely to find work, by stopping at truck stops and rest areas and playing for ga
