This is an excellent question. Most of North America (cannot speak for Europe as I've never lived there) takes wood totally for granted. However, wood is a very scarce commodity in places like India and I expect that to be the case in other tropical 3rd world countries. There are no deciduous forests on the same scale as here.
In the remote rural areas, people do use wood as cooking fuel. However, most of it is dry twigs and branches (what could be called brush) and creates huge smoke. It is by no means a source of light. Most people use kerosene lanterns as the primary light source where they can afford one.
