Comment As a Student... (Score 1) 783

The myriad of fields is why I chose IT as my major. I love computers, I've built them since I was 12 or 13, put Fedora on my laptop when it was first launched, etc. The passion is their for me, especially in the Unix/Linux SysAdmin field (currently taking a RHCE class and taking the exam in January). But, I have things to fall back on, I'm picking up a business minor, I love english and originally wanted a degree in journalism, but I loved computers to much to pass up IT, I LOVE graphic & web design and run a small online design firm myself, I even had hired a coder that I originally outsourced my clients to, and continue to produce PSDs which I sell to clients. My coder, a student as well, dropped off the interwebz when his school life got busy, but it was nice while it lasted. The moneys okay, I'm not known well, but it helps pay for school and I love working for people and hearing their gratitude for a fantastic website design. I'm building my portfolio with a hobby and with that, if IT doesn't go my way I look forward to applying to design firms around my area, I've already submitted portfolios to some firms for internship opportunities and am awaiting word. I've heard the woes of the IT world, working for evil corporations and dealing with jackasses, and I've heard the better side of things with my brother who works on a Cisco VOIP test team with a fun work environment and a beer and cookies day. It's all about loving what you do and enjoying what you do, and if you don't enjoy it then get out FAST.

Submission + - Uproar as MW2's IW announces No Dedicated Servers

An anonymous reader writes: Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling (aka fourzerotwo), in an interview with BashandSlash.com on October 17th has announced that one of the mainstays of PC multiplayer gaming, dedicated servers, won't be in IW's upcoming sequel to Call of Duty 4. Instead, players will use the unknown "IW Net" for matchmaking purposes. No dedicated servers means no player mods, no player maps, no organized competitive play, no clan servers, etc and strips away from what makes PC gaming unique from console gaming. Many vocal gamers have cancelled their preorders. IW has deleted most of the threads and petitions on IW's forums, however one petition lives on. As of the time of this writing, there are over 76,000 signatures and counting.

I cant see DLC-only being limited to being your console only. These companies know that even though there has been less emphasis on playing together with friends in the home (as opposed to over the internet) in recent years, its still a major reason to own a console and a major part of the video game experience. So, the companies like Microsoft could easily follow the steam approach, where a user could login to there friends console through Xbox Live, download the games and DLC that they have and still enjoy the gaming experience with there friends, only to be booted off if he signed in somewhere else. Still though, its a long way away. A majority of the market still doesn't participate in Live or even PSN, and the requirements for DLC content, bandwidth, etc, to be reliable and worth the money to push for, aren't in most homes yet, and don't meet the budgets of most console gamers.

No - IT IS school .. my major is entirely based on certification programs, so it already has happened, it has replaced traditional education. I'm at East Carolina University in the IT Networking Security program. We concentrate on certifications and then build on what they teach .. as well as earn them.

Comment Should be a utility (Score 1) 621

The need for Internet access is honestly becoming a needed utility, at least in the technology prone countries. At some point, I imagine basic Internet companies will fall and the government will take over the responsibility to provide Internet services at that level. Anything higher, beyond cable speeds, like FIOS and other fiber alternatives will most likely continue operating. Face it - The internet is becoming more necessary than TV or Radio - even though TV isn't being offered as a utility (atleast I don't think it is) internet access is a much bigger necessity, it powers the economy, the media and the entire information sector. It is becoming the ultimate entertainment sector as well. Why watch TV when you can go on hulu and watch your favorite shows? why listen to the radio when you can browse Last.fm? I haven't watched CNN in ages, I'd rather go to cnn or bbc.com and view the news on my schedule. It just seems to make sense to make this a government owned operation or utility - I praise Wilson's effort and hope Greenlight comes to the Raleigh area!

All of my classes use Blackboard or Moodle, I barely take paper tests anymore (all online) .. and I regret buying 3 of my books because all of the text is online. I just finished up Cisco Netacad which had everything online, and am currently taking Redhat Academy. Not to mention, about 2 weeks ago I had a virtual lecture in Second Life! I still think going to class is essential however ... in some cases if I don't at least sit myself down in a class I begin to lose track and miss out on some of the more convenient information.

And then you compare it to Burnout: Paradise - a game that was developed for/on the PS3 and then ported to the PC and 360 respectively - and inturn became a fantastic PC (and 360 game) port with awesome performance and incredibly bug free. The cell architecture has its pros and cons, just like anything else. Except Sony doesn't really enjoy putting their first party games on their competitors OS ... so, we won't get to see many amazing ports, since third-party developers that most likely will make ports will probably be developing with the 360 in mind. I don't blame them, if I wanted to minimize my costs, or even get a game on the market quickly I would head up development on the 360. Most third-party devs, especially indie devs and the new guys that haven't been picked up by Sony or M$ to develop, may not have the budget to develop for the PS3, which is a shame. But I think the PS3 really has something going for it with the cell... Games designed specifically for the cell and not dually developed with the 360 in mind ex) Sony exclusives, MGS4, KillZone 2, etc. are fantastic in quality. And to make my post longer, I end with a question, what about the new Final Fantasy or even Resident Evil 5 - I wonder what platform these games started development on?

That's where the console market is rocking the pc market.. Used games.

Sure, PC is the way to go in most situations, better upgradeable hardware, and most of the great games are being released on the platform, but the console perks do save you the moola.

Why do companies that release singleplayer games with absolutely no multiplayer content wonder why their games are coming up on torrents across the net?

When with a console you can just resell the game... atleast Valve got a "little" smart by adding their "gift option" which allows users to gift a game they currently have, but why not a "sell option" where you can sell a game on your account to another user through a transaction, monitored through steam, and that user gets it, its removed from your Games list and taa dahh. Because when people try to sell there steam accounts cause they don't want to keep playing Half-Life 2 till there eyes bleed (Great title though), they can't because steam closes their account. Steam is a great idea that's executed badly, and Steam isn't adding more support for extra stuff they just add more games, more companies, more money. Valve is a big company now.. soon they'll be EA, and EA and them will merge, and EA Marketplace will be Steam.. AND....
