Whenever I see books like this, I always wonder why people do not use the dynlayer api.

This has been around for quite sometime. Handles drags, moves, events, layers, z index, etc. Everything. True, it is now a bit big, but do like I do and remove what you do not need and away you go. You can AJAX as a separate piece.
