I actually DO remember those, because Verizon, then my phone company, was based out of one of them and after it got squished I didn't get a phone bill for three months.
They also repurposed all the meter maids who patrolled the parking meters in front of my apartment to hunting terrorists or something, so I stopped getting parking tickets as well.
