I never had the opportunity to use OS9/68k. I remember an Australian company sold copies for the Atari ST line, but I didn't have a neither an Amiga nor ST. Otherwise, I was happy with OS-9 Level 2 from Tandy up until PCs caught up with its ability to multitask.

I don't hate gods or Santa Clause or The Easter Bunny but then, when was the last time someone killed another person over the Easter Bunny? More people have died for a god then probably any other reason.

I agree with that part, but a god is STILL an figment of HUMAN imagination. Crimes of Passion, greed, and even killing over overpriced sneakers was also causes death and misery, but there is no central group of people raging against those specifically, either. Death, regardless of the numbers is still death. people still mourn for their lost love ones. It shouldn't be a numbers game to begin with.

Atheist is literally not believe a god exist. The label exists because most people seem to, by default, believe there is a god because that's what they are brainwashed into believing from childhood. If you are unsure about it, your label would be an agnostic and honestly, might be more appropriate anyway. Of course, I can't proof their is no god, but then the burden of proof isn't on the atheist in the first place.

While I do appreciate your candor in all this, I would like you not to label me. Even if you think it's in the positive. Thank you.

As you said an Atheist is "literally not believe a god exist", but as we speak, there is no variant for Santa for example. God doesn't exist, we agree on that, but the label is baffling to say the least since there no analogue for other mythical beings, just that one.

It's also not even faith in a god that bothers me but the organized religions. They are systems of control used to lead people around and often times are used to convince people to do what a rational person would consider wrong. Religion is used as a justification for all sorts of terrible crimes. It's used by people to con others out of money and to elevate themselves. It's used to treat women and non-heteros as second class citizens.

Again, we agree on that, but from what I've seen it's certain "humans" that they do not "agree" with, not just those who has a specific gender or orientation. There were cases in the past that black and other non-Caucasian people were killed (yes, men, women, children, and non-heteros come in non-Caucasian varieties, shocking!) and even their churches ironically were burned down in the Americas and that was as recent as the 20th century. Let's not forget the innocents during WWII and other conflicts, and not just those that died by Nazi hands.

Humanity as a whole is plagued by this, not just specific groups is what I'm trying to imply. It's a human sickness that can only be stopped by humans. No one is dismissing certain areas of humanity, but unfortunately like any out of control fire, if you focus on one area, the rest will still burn.

I also think Christianity gets a lot of attention from atheist because in countries you can be out as an atheist Christianity tends to be the main religion. I wouldn't feel safe divulging my non-beliefs in a Muslim majority country, especially not in the Middle East. Probably jail me for blasphemy or worse. Christianity gets a lot of hate because look at all the atrocities that have been committed over the centuries in the Christian God's name.

Then why feel the need to label yourself at all? I don't label myself, and reject said labels for that very reason, nor do i have a need to announce my non-beliefs to others. It's none of their personal business anyways, nor do I think they want to hear about it to begin with.

You don't see arguments over childhood fantasies because no one is trying to form laws and guidelines of living life based on whether or not the Easter Bunny exist. Hard line religious folk are doing just that. Islam is as much a political system as it is a religion. Many Christians would be all to happy to decree laws based on their belief system. It's dangerous thinking based in nonsense. That's why you see atheist raging against religions.

Again, it can be considered indoctrination or even a mental illness, and as such, instead of raging (your choice of word) about people believing in the sky princess, maybe a better use of one's time would be working with others in finding a cure in stopping it. Sometimes even talking to people will go a long way (Like what we are doing here). It may not get the numbers, but waking up one single person from their delusions is better than none, and more effective than pointing and screaming that they believe in foolish tales.

Comment Re: Stupid people... (Score 1) 189

Aside of all the labeling, I guess what I was trying to say was that I feel that both religion and atheism tends to gravitate over the idea of a deity (or lack of) regardless if said deity is Christian or what not. That's why I made the comparison to Harry Potter fans and detractors and the Bible (for example) is as real as Potter and as its fans and detractors. I don't call myself an atheist though i'm not a believer in (any) religion and not just Christianity (which seems to be the focus for a lot of atheists), but for the reason of why since also, for example, there's no atheist analogue to Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, the Easter Bunny and the Gumdrop Princess. All are equally not real, but for gods of religion it seems to be a special case. For me it's odd to see someone believe in something that's clearly not real, but equally odd that that the detractors have created a name for themselves based on that. To my knowledge no one on Slashdot ever got into arguments over the existence of the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy, nor have a group of people created a label for themselves based on that belief or lack thereof , but yet religion has somehow garnered both. Yet, I don't wake up in the morning loving or hating the the tooth fairy, so why do it for any god? It has no relevance to my day-to-day and just because one is more popular than the others don't mean I should give it preference for by disdain. I don't hate Santa, the Easter bunny, the tooth fairy, or even gods for that matter, and why should I? They're not real! Humanity on the other hand is deserving of it. It's easy to blame imaginary things for the woes of the world, but it seems harder to blame humanity for creating them in the first place.

I don't understand this religion/atheist circle jerk that I see in these posts. A clarification might help, but I see both sides as mentally ill. One side believes in a fictional sky man, the other side hates said fictional sky man even though they know he's not real? Religion is a human-made construct. It wasn't made out of thin air, but you have people who will follow the words of a book of fiction and on the other end you have those that want said book of fiction burned because it was made by some invisible man that supposed to not exist in the first place. It's like watching Harry Potter fans and their detractors bickering back and fourth. Would it be easier to, I don't know, Just accept the world as is and move on with your lives without the labels?
