Comment Oh no poor Michigan! (Score 1) 201

Michigan would rather be in the same time zone as the "all mighty" New York City than the loser city across the lake (Chicago). With respect to Daylight Savings Time, the biggest "losers" (late sunrises in winter) are places in the far north and in the western edge of their time zone. So if they don't like late sunrises, move timezones. Another issue is that the earliest sunset in the US is like Nov 4, so DST changes to non-DST right at the worst time of the year. Boom! You are driving home in the dark.

Google search results pages without javascript has been systematically broken for a while. They removed the ability to use enter key to do a search. Then there is a state for further searches where the search button disappeared. Then a search would bring up an empty first page and you had to scroll to the bottom and go to page 2 to see the results of the search. Then you had to reload the search results page because it would return a blank page (somehow reloading would bring up more info) and then finally even this stopped working. No way I am going to put "google.com" (evil) in my allow javascript exception list.

Comment Banks don't care about security if you eat losses (Score 5, Informative) 46

With dealing with my Mom's check fraud, I have determined the big national banks (Bank of America) do not check the images for checks deposited by mobile (and highly likely ATM). You can write over the amount in a comically obvious fashion. You can put X for the victims signature (not checked). You can paste a copy of the victims signature with visible tear marks at weird angles and locations on the checks (waste of time due to the above). Passes right through their "advanced" AI fraud image checking system. You can complain that check processing has been crapified, but the regulatory bodies (e.g. OCC) don't care as they have been regulatory captured. You might try complaining to your state's Attorney General, but in my case they passed the buck to the state's US Senators. Who won't do anything because they (or members of their party) are owned by the banks. Thus, I am now totally cynical about bank security (and the US government) when they can make their customers eat the losses due to their political power.

Comment Banks not responsible according to US regulators (Score 1) 50

Banks not responsible according to US regulators.
Citibank is regulated by the federal agency the OCC. The OCC is captured by the big banks and allows them to run with no fraud detection and the banks will force customers to eat the losses. Take the exploding check fraud epidemic, the national banks do not check the check images for fraud (such as mobile/ATM deposit). The only thing they really look at is the routing numbers and the numeric amount field which is easily modified. Utterly comical check fraud will pass through the system no problem. At least the NY Attorney General seems to be doing something. Complaints to the CA Attorney General (Rob Bonta) about national banking fraud will get a response to write your Senators.

Comment Windows 7 not really EOL because W7 ESU (Score 3, Interesting) 151

Rocking Windows 7 Extended Security Updates (ESU) here. Looks like ZDNet article being ignorant on purpose. I would love to upgrade my old PC, but why? Its a i7 Sandy Bridge running at 4.8 Ghz and my graphics card is a NV 2080 (previous card burned up). New processors are like 30% faster per core. High core count processors have until recently came with a big drops in core frequency and having 16+ cores (vs 4) doesn't really help many apps.

Comment Angry Mozilla wasting money not working on browser (Score 1) 341

Instead of rightly fixing bugs in the Firefox browser (huge number in Bugzilla) (fixing bugs boring!), Mozilla decided to waste money on random crap like Rust and Firefox OS, etc. Mozilla Firefox is in freefall (I now use Pale Moon (since Australis)), besides their garbage UX "improvements", removing functionality and copying Chrome, I blame wasting tons of money on vanity research projects and fancy offices instead of concentrating on their primary mission. So I see Rust as the "Mozilla Mismanagement Computer Language".

Sure C++ sucks, but really, if C++ is just too hard for them to master with respect to building a browser, then maybe you shouldn't be building something as important as the main alternative open source browser.

Comment Verizon is disgusting (Score 2, Informative) 370

Verizon signed my dementia addled father for not one but two long term wireless contracts. Luckily (not really) he brought me in to deal with it before the FCC 30 day termination deadline. First they didn't mail promised phone return labels. After many calls later and the phones were returned and the account payed off. Then, boom, a month later they sent a bill for early termination fees. It seems that my father had called them to see if they would release a previously ported phone number back to the original carrier (he decided he was too old not to have a landline). Well it seems some helpful associate/technician trying to help my pathetic dad get his number back triggered early termination penalties and this was found later in some beancounter audit. The person he talked to did not indicate he would have to pay ~$200 to get his number back. Incredibly, trying to get the early termination fees re-removed from the account was denied. Even when the employees try their best to help you, the Verizon faceless machine Corporation will screw you.
