I haven't noticed a price increase either, but I have noticed it's been taking about a week (for non-Prime, free shipping) from placing the order to it being shipped. I live in a major metropolitan area and the packages used to ship within a day or two (unless they were out of stock), but the last few orders were all held for at least five working days before shipping. All the items were "sold and shipped by Amazon". Maybe coincidence, but I do see a lot of people mentioning it.

Submission + - An Ethical Question Regarding Ebooks (thunk.org)

tytso writes: "Suppose there is a book that you want to read on your ebook reader, but it is out of print (so even if you purchase the dead-tree version of the book used, the author won't receive any royalties) and the publisher has refused to make it available as an ebook. You can buy it from Amazon as a used book, but that isn't your preferred medium. It is available on the internet as a pirated etext, however. This blog post outlines a few possibilities, and then asks the questions, ``What is the right thing to do? And why?'' I'm also curious if the answers change depending on whether you are a Baby Boomer, or a Gen X, Gen Y, etc. — I've noticed that attitudes around copyright seem to change depending on whether someone is a college student or a recent college graduate, versus someone who can remember a time when the Internet did not exist."

If you've really been a Linux user (assuming it has been your main OS) for 12 years, why have you felt the need to spend so much time tinkering and tweaking? Are you constantly switching to the latest and greatest distribution/desktop environment when it's released? I've used Slackware (Blackbox/Fluxbox WM) for the last 10 years and my major tinkering/tweaking days ended before the turn of the century.

When I get a new PC it takes at most a 2-3 hours (including copying all my personal/configuration data from backup) to install and configure. One of the main reasons I continue to use Linux is because I don't want to spend time tinkering/tweaking the system.

Molten Salt-Based Solar Power Plant 478

rcastro0 writes "Hamilton Sundstrand, a division of United Technologies, announced today that it will start to commercialize a new type of solar power plant. A new company called SolarReserve will be created to provide heat-resistant pumps and other equipment, as well as the expertise in handling and storing salt that has been heated to more than 1,050 degrees Fahrenheit. According to venture capitalist Vinod Khosla 'Three percent of the land area of Morocco could support all of the electricity for Western Europe.' Molten Salt storage is already used in Nevada's Solar One power plant. Is this the post-hydrocarbon world finally knocking?"
