The justification is derived from the question What is the most important part of debugging? to which the answer is Laying Blame[1].

Or, stating it more professionally: the most important part of debugging is finding the cause, which is more quickly found if you can see:
- What changed recently?
- Was it part of some bigger group of changes?
- Who made the change?

If you know who changed it last, you know who to ask questions of.

[1] We can prove that laying blame is the most important part of debugging by observing the behavior of any group of developers after a bug is discovered. The conversation immediately takes the form "Did Mary touch that last?" and "Wasn't Joe making changes there as part of the new authentication stuff?"

Researchers found that water samples from 33 cities across the United State could be reliably traced back to their origin based on their isotope ratios. And because the human body breaks down water's constituent atoms of hydrogen and oxygen to construct the proteins that make hair cells, those cells can preserve the record of a person's travels. Such information could help prosecutors place a suspect at the scene of a crime, or prove the innocence of the accused." s31523 writes "The Mars rover Opportunity has beaten the original record of six years and 116 days operating on the surface of Mars, originally set by the Viking 1 Lander. While the Spirit rover has been on the surface longer than the Opportunity by three weeks, it has been out of communication since March 22. If Spirit comes back online, it will attain the new Martian surface longevity record. This feat, right on the heels of another longevity feat (Voyager 2 and twin on the verge of entering interstellar space and still kicking) is healing some of NASA's past black eyes. It is quite remarkable given original spec of 90 days for the mission. With the passing of the solstice, warmer temperatures and more sun will likely mean the rover will continue on."

The Government intends to amend the Broadcasting Services Act in August 2010 to enforce the filter, and expects the filter to be operational within a further twelve months. 'The report into the pilot trial of ISP-level filtering demonstrates that blocking RC-rated material can be done with 100 percent accuracy and negligible impact on internet speed' Senator Conroy, Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy said." This despite, as reader Sharky2009 writes, the trial run showing that "a technically competent user could circumvent filtering technology based on ACMA’s blacklist."

'These detections indicate that low-mass planets are quite common around nearby stars. The discovery of potentially habitable nearby worlds may be just a few years away,' said Steven Vogt, a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at UCSC. Among hundreds of our nearest stellar neighbors, 61 Vir stands out as being the most nearly similar to the Sun in terms of age, mass, and other essential properties."

Big Dipper "Star" Actually a Sextuplet System 88

Theosis sends word that an astronomer at the University of Rochester and his colleagues have made the surprise discovery that Alcor, one of the brightest stars in the Big Dipper, is actually two stars; and it is apparently gravitationally bound to the four-star Mizar system, making the whole group a sextuplet. This would make the Mizar-Alcor sextuplet the second-nearest such system known. The discovery is especially surprising because Alcor is one of the most studied stars in the sky. The Mizar-Alcor system has been involved in many "firsts" in the history of astronomy: "Benedetto Castelli, Galileo's protege and collaborator, first observed with a telescope that Mizar was not a single star in 1617, and Galileo observed it a week after hearing about this from Castelli, and noted it in his notebooks... Those two stars, called Mizar A and Mizar B, together with Alcor, in 1857 became the first binary stars ever photographed through a telescope. In 1890, Mizar A was discovered to itself be a binary, being the first binary to be discovered using spectroscopy. In 1908, spectroscopy revealed that Mizar B was also a pair of stars, making the group the first-known quintuple star system."

Comment Re:SPEC has been BS and numbers since day one, but (Score 1) 709

Well, thanks for the opinion. But FWIW most of the SPEC people I actually work with every day believe that SPEC really does add "an ounce of honest data" (which is worth more than a pound of marketing hype). See SPEC's background/philosophy statement.

Yes, even honest data can be misunderstood, taken out of context, or abused.

Example misunderstanding: the comment that said that compiler optimizations are "cheating". Nope, compiler optimizations are allowed by design. The SPEC CPU benchmarks are specifically intended to test CPU, memory hierarchy (caches & main memory), and compilers. (Of course, compiler optimizations are expected to be generally useful, and not unfairly "target" a specific benchmark. That's a judgment call which SPEC has sometimes had to work hard to make.)

Now, one can argue about whether Apple's attempt to hold the compiler constant was a reasonable thing to do, given that the CPU2000 benchmarks are intended to test all three of cpu/memory/compiler. But they at least have told us what they did, and how they did it, and in my book that goes a long way toward supplying the ounce of honest data.

For those who suggest that improvements should be made to the SPEC benchmarks in one way or another, please be reminded that you can join SPEC (discounts for academic/non-profit memberships) and you can contribute to new benchmarks (and earn modest financial compensation if your benchmark is accepted.)

SPEC has a long history of welcoming technical contributions by technical people (but is less responsive to complaints - we know it's impossible to please everyone).
