Believing You Are Very Good Or Evil Boosts Your Physical Capabilities 192

Research by Kurt Gray, a doctoral student in psychology at Harvard, shows that a person's capacity for willpower and physical endurance increases if they perceive themselves as good or evil. "Evil" acts in particular give a person a large boost in physical strength. From the article: “'People perceive those who do good and evil to have more efficacy, more willpower, and less sensitivity to discomfort,' Gray said. 'By perceiving themselves as good or evil, people embody these perceptions, actually becoming more capable of physical endurance.' Gray’s findings run counter to the notion that only those blessed with heightened willpower or self-control are capable of heroism, suggesting instead that simply attempting heroic deeds can confer personal power."

Son Sues Mother Over Facebook Posts 428

Most kids hate having their parents join in on a discussion on Facebook, but one 16-year-old in Arkansas hates it so much he has filed suit against his mother, charging her with harassment. From the article: "An Arkadelphia mother is charged with harassment for making entries on her son's Facebook page. Denise New's 16-year-old son filed charges against her last month and requested a no-contact order after he claims she posted slanderous entries about him on the social networking site. New says she was just trying to monitor what he was posting." Seems like he could just unfriend her.

Right, like how the LHC turned out. Oh wait, that was the Americans' fault; teaching our 'dirty tricks' to Europeans. Look, when you mess up, 'fess up. Don't pass the buck across the ocean. I also like your 'rational assessments.' Bigoted ethnocentric moron.

Comment Human Life vs. Free Speech (Score 1) 414

If human life must always prevail over free speech, then the many who have died to protect it have done so in vain. I'm not usually utilitarian, but I concede that some must be lost for the protection of a principle which serves to shield mankind from tyranny and oppression. I wonder what the opinion is of the man in question; would he willingly give his life for the principle? If not, then I admit I am conflicted, for it is a separate thing entirely to demand another to die for principles not his own.
