Comment Mostly all windows 10 (Score 1) 198

Staff bring in their Macs, and I'm the only one using Linux. So at least they allow me the freedom to use Linux as my main OS. I also have access to windows servers, and my own Windows 10 VM. I work in a private school that is K-12, I teach and have some IT duties as well. I really enjoy having the best of both worlds with my unique setup. There have been so many times having the power of Linux has helped solve things. It's like having a swiss army knife.

To quote from the original post "The digital magazine Aeon published a thought-provoking proposal this spring" I don't usually post to slashdot anymore but this one caught my eye for it's insanity. 1. I find this question as thought provoking as to quote Jack Handy "why do we park on the driveway and drive on the parkway" - This is a no brainer, AI do not deserve rights. 2. If programmers (and law makers) are so short sighted as to first create programs with actual feelings and emotions, and then law makers buy into this...... we'll be getting what we deserve for a complete lack of wisdom. There is no question to ponder here.

Disney is just acting like the children they market to. What kid doesn't get greedy at Christmas, dreaming of every toy or gadget or gizmo. Either Disney has lost touch with their roots or their roots were always rotten. In the end it make sense to buy a physical copy whenever possible then rip it to digital yourself. These digital copies that Disney offers are joke, there is just too much DRM. The last time I looked at them ( a few years ago now) I noticed that you could only have the digital copy on a few devices and those devices died you weren't granted the rights to make more copies. Thanks but no thanks. For real joke just look at the Mickey mouse copyright extentions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_Term_Extension_Act I'm sure many of you know this already but it's freaking rediculous in every sense of the word rediculous. Shame on corporate America.

I have a colleagues Windows 8 Ultrabook on my desk, helping them with software installations..... I thought Windows 8 was despicable when I first tried it...... and my opinion isn't improving any. As far as an interface is concerned I think it's utterly horrible. On my workstation I use a combination of Ubuntu host, and Windows 7 VM. I find both quite efficient and usable. Neither Ubuntu or Windows had every changed their OS in one update so radically that I felt like a new user, until Windows 8. It is probably the worst OS update I've ever seen. No matter what computer I buy in the near future it will first run Ubuntu and then some kind of windows VM but not 8. Unfortunately Microsoft will claim this as another windows 8 license sold. More like another computer user forced to buy something they didn't really want I hate being forced to count as a Microsoft stat.

This printer costs between $500-$600 canadian. I believe it was given by our dealer because they couldn't sell it, or because they knew that if we used it they would make a small fortune selling us replacement toner. Their are 4 toner cartridges each costs $80-$90 for xerox brand replacements. The cartridges are rated for 1900 pages which is like going through a box a tissues! Any serious printing of full color pages would burn through the toner in a month or less. Needless to say we use it sparingly, and collect $1 per page from students to use it. The toner almost costs as much as a the printer did new. How insane! While we are happy to have a color laser printer, I would never have bought this one.

What Do You Do When Printers Cost Less Than Ink? 970

An anonymous reader writes "A family member recently asked me to pick up more ink for her Epson Photo RX 595. Unfortunately, replacing the black and color ink cartridges costs $81.92 + tax at the local store! That's so bad that I got a replacement printer that's just as good, and spare ink, for less. But now I have a useless piece of e-waste that I can't even give away. What can you do with a printer like that? I hate to just throw it away."
