I suspect that a lot of mediocre products appear simply because there were so many showstopping bugs to chase down that there was never any time to smooth out the rough edges.

This is quite often the case. If there is any bug that causes a reset or blank screen its the highest priority bug until its fixed. It doesn't matter how many steps it takes to reproduce it, or if it happens 1 in 1000 times. These bugs are usually the hardest to find and can take weeks to diagnose.
