Solar power is superior to nuclear fission because the technology exists now to scale solar plus storage to a national level for energy generation replacement of fossil fuels. Whereas nuclear fission is still, at best case scenario, 10 years from commercialization. You shill.

Hey EditorDavid, Do you understand the difference between the words "Change", and "Damage?" I'll just paste the quote from CNN for you; "Greenpeace said the water, in addition to radioactive isotope tritium, contains radioactive isotope carbon-14, which is "major contributor to collective human radiation dose and has the potential to damage human DNA."" Way to bait readers with garbage headlines.

Comment Jack Wallen hasn't made sense in awhile (Score 1, Interesting) 239

Has anyone read Javk Wallens previous articles recently? He doesn't have a very good grasp of the technical issues or a good understanding of IT business. The guy writes with teenager-level optimism on subject matter he only understands at a very high level. He'd probably make a good bad CEO. I'm not sure why in the world Microsoft would bother with it's own version of Linux when they're already succeeding in moving people to the cloud and browser. I see a more likely scenario being Microsoft stops Windows development and moves to pure play cloud infrastructure and office software. That's unlikely because Windows is what is commonly referred to as a Cash Cow in business. There's so much momentum behind it's use in business that even a global pandemic hasn't changed ITs recommendation for it. MAYBE they'll acquire a Linux desktop development company like Tongxin or Ubuntu or SUSE and then say look we develop a Linux desktop now, but it's way more likely they'll keep milking Windows and streamlining it to keep up with Linux for the next few decades. Businesses and consumers won't switch to Linux with sudo type powers. They want constraints. The other part of his argument that has zero foresight is -- the more people that use Linux the more viruses that will be created. Windows isn't insecure because it sucks (though IMO it does suck for other reasons), Windows is insecure because most businesses and consumers use it and hackers look to exploit where the most people are. That's economics. If everyone was on Linux we'd see a lot more exploits, malware, etc. being developed.

Comment Platform Cooperatives (Score 1) 58

There's a new form of organization called the Platform Cooperative that's trying to address the sustainability question. Essentially software development by a cooperative, with an annual membership fee to be able to vote for governance of the project. The membership fee provides sustaining funds. Snowdrift Coop also did a really in depth paper on crowd sourcing models and how to make open source projects sustainable.

Americans will likely not use this distribution because of privacy concerns. But regardless. UOS is based on Deepin, which is based on Debian. If they actually reached 20% penetration in the Chinese market, (what, half the population of China uses a desktop?) that's at least 100 million Debian linux desktop users. If 1% of those people start hacking the software like they did for making pirated Windows XP, the upstream contributions are going to increase substantially. I think this could lead to Debian being the new desktop operating system of choice in 5 or 10 years. Shame Ian isn't around to see it happen. :\

Comment What's that rule? (Score 1) 91

What's that rule about how anytime a question in an article title is asked, the answer is always 'No'? Imo, Android is an open source operating system. There's no need to reinvent the wheel. The Chinese are throwing millions at Deepin Linux rather than reinvent an OS, why would they do anything different for Mobile? It takes many years to develop a quality OS.

For some reason I can't upvote but this is the best comment. Working in strategy consulting for organizations I can tell you we explore Open Source for value it provides where it is strategical relevant. Organizations won't open source income generators. I think there needs to be a new definition, Open Source (infrastructure, modules, Linux Foundation managed, etc. Type) vs. Open Source (Community run, platform coops, consumer/business end user complete software, The Document Foundation type). I'm not sure where the line separates but as major corporations start recuperating Open Source a new definition will emerge.
