As companies that have received a LOT of handouts to allegedly keep their prices low and reach that "last mile" (and failed at both), their opposition is to be expected. Try Verizon's "fast internet" (DSL up to 5 MB down, crap up) for live-streaming or both working + having a netflix/prime stream in the same house. Try being charged for equipment that the technicians never hook up or aren't actually needed. Then imagine these big providers losing their monopoly status and finally needing to actually compete + no longer being the single source of net + phone + tv bundles that raise prices every year. No more take it or leave it service areas. Half the little areas could be served by a half rack of servers + any to the home delivery method that would reach customers and out-perform those giant "experts at providing." Someone just needs to teach rural Americans how to configure DNS etc to avoid their locals from providing the communities only what "locals need to see" on search hits or content.

If you bothered to join #libera on the new network, clearly in the topic was the note that the spam on Freenode was not from Libera staff. Staff there are many or most the ones who had generously volunteered their time and skills to keep Freenode running for years. Implying they were part or actually accusing those staff of being the spammers is nonsense and not worth even debating.

The spam was not necessarily coming from libera or at all coming from "libera" proper. What IS libera? Libera is the network and extended out could be considered those who run it. Neither the network nor the ircops were doing the spam, so you are incorrect saying that the spam was "from Libera." I was there, on both networks. I experienced what was going on and to a degree helped mitigate it for a few channels. What was being published (not spammed) was that channels, official support channels etc., were being migrated. One cannot expect project space to simply abandon their folks and leave them wondering where they went. Yes, other spam was happening too, but anyone of any intelligence would have known that the true spam bots were not the projects, and one would think since mass project moving was already underway that extreme care would have been taken by staff to avoid irritating more people; clearly the users of the network (people and projects) were of no concern as staff acted. Understandably, the "new and crap version of Freenode management" didn't like projects leaving and disliked the notifications. They seize control of channel namespace rather than think "how can we stop the mass exodus" or build some kind of trust/faith with the groups leaving. Their chief moron has a history of making rash and very poor decisions. This is just another in his collective list of bad moves. There is not one spec of planning or leadership skills being demonstrated by King Clown or his cronies. Projects cannot and will not tolerate impulsive tyrides and explosive bursts by those who are supposed to be keeping the network platform stable. As Freenode falls, no one with shed a tear. Other than the nostalgia feeling for what was a long-standing safe harbor and friendly network, there is no loss. When a house is on fire, people exit it, and when needed a new one is found or built. This has been done, no one is homeless. Anything left behind has no value, including those who now own or staff Freenode.
