Math Indicates Pollster Is Forging Results 319

An anonymous reader writes "Nate Silver suggests the political pollster Strategic Vision is 'cooking the books. And whoever is doing so is doing a pretty sloppy job.' Silver crunched five years worth of their polling data, and found their reported results followed a suspicious pattern which traditionally suggests fraud. The five-year distribution of the numbers 'is not random. It's not close to random.' The polling firm had already been reprimanded by the American Association for Public Opinion Research for failing to disclose their methodology, though the firm argues they did comply with the organization's request. Their response to Silver's accusation? 'We have a call in to our attorney on this and fully intend to take action that will vindicate us.'"

Ok some tools I use to make my life easier (all free):

Basic usage:

  • Drop the contents of your winxp install CD onto your HD. Download the latest service pack.
  • Start and Point nlite to both.
  • Choose any option that you like but don't create an iso.
  • It will automatically integrate the service pack.
  • About integrating hotfixes see RVM packs, which is compatible with nlite. http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/ (also more info about appz integration)
  • Again options, choose what fits you. (Talking about nlite)
  • Save
  • Now follow the driverpacks site instructions to add the drivers to your install CD/DVD.
  • About integrating extra applications see: http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/page/list /switch/ for general info look at its home site: http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/ and google for specific appz.
  • After first boot run autopatcher latest version. (if needed, RVM packs if done well, don't need this step)
  • Run your personal little script.
  • Now you have a working winxp installation with all tools and most actual updates.
  • Deploy!

Fleischmann to Work on Commercial Fusion Heater 245

deeptrace writes "California company D2Fusion has announced they are hiring Dr. Martin Fleischmann (of 'Pons and Fleischmann' fame). The company belives that they can produce a commercial fusion based home heating prototype within a year. They are also looking at other applications, such as using it as a heat source for a commercially available Stirling electrical generator."

Shining a Light on Interplanetary Communication 84

An anonymous reader writes "Researchers at the MIT have developed a new device that they claim could one day boost interplanetary communication to broadband speeds. From the article: 'The new light detector improves detection efficiency to 57 percent at a wavelength of 1,550 nanometers--the same wavelength used by optical fibers on Earth to carry broadband signals to homes and offices. Currently, light detectors only absorb about 20 percent of the light they receive. "It can take hours with the existing wireless radio frequency technology to get useful scientific information back from Mars to Earth," said study team member Karl Berggren from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "But an optical link can do that thousands of times faster."'"

Microsoft Goes Head-to-Head With IBM 274

conq writes "BusinessWeek has a piece on Microsoft's latest announcements that it is going after large-business computing, a realm that IBM currently has a stronghold on." From the article: "In both cases, the company has fashioned 'enterprise' versions of the products with additional security and collaboration-enabling features for sale to large businesses. Microsoft has spent $20 billion over the past three years on these upgrades, and Ballmer says it will spend $500 million over the next year marketing them to corporations. 'We're unlocking the next wave of growth for Microsoft,' Ballmer predicted during a press conference after his speech." We've previously discussed Microsoft's plans for IBM.

Journal Journal: Internet

I'm not that long on the internet compared to some people. I think I got on the Internet in 2001 with a dial up modem. Since a year or two I have broadband internet and it costs me some bugs. About 100 a month. So I'm loosing a lot of money on it.

I do get benifits from it. For instance I hardly watch TV anymore as all the news and information I can get on the Internet.

Also I like websites like www.howstuffworks and wikipidia.
