Comment scummy biz practices around domain names (Score 1) 60

I just helped a client move their website and domain name away from wix. When transferring a domain name away from them they shut down the website (and email!) immediately. There is nothing in the process that requires touching the website, as you are only moving the registration no changes to the name servers or the MX records but they shut down the site and removed all DNS records immediately...meaning that the client’s site and email went away. i then had to go back in and ‘associate a website w this domain name’ (or some such bs) for the time it was still transferring. fortunately, reassigning the website to the domain name restored the DNS (and thank God I had a copy of the website and had done a full DNS report prior to flipping the switch), But someone might not even notice that this is happened and lose a day worth of business and emails before calling in and it’s just bad karma bullshit registrar behavior. And don’t get me started on their websites The only reason I can think of for why they would do this is to force users to call in so they would have another chance to sell them on wix’s services. I have never experienced this kind of scummy practice over 24 years of dealing with hundreds and hundreds of websites and many many registrars.

uh... if you don't like apple, don't buy their products. if you don't think the iphone u/i, design and features rock, spend your money elsewhere. if you DO get one, though, are you saying you'd carry it around without a protective case (or skin)? you know, the kind that would put a layer between the metal antenna and sweaty palm that could potentially affect reception? like... making this a big non-issue?

shouldn't the bottom line be: if you consistently meet or beat your deadlines when the music is cranked, crank on. if listening to music negatively impacts your productivity, then no music for you, bunky. is the manager's goal to set one-size-fits-all policies? or embrace the diversity of the programmer pool for the benefit of the company? just wondering. i usually have music on, and find that the right music will support proposal writing, coding, debugging, whatever. if you can't listen and work at the same time, don't.

47th Mersenne Prime Confirmed 89

radiot88 writes to let us know that he heard a confirmation of the discovery of the 47th known Mersenne Prime on NPR's Science Friday (audio here). The new prime, 2^42,643,801 - 1, is actually smaller than the one discovered previously. It was "found by Odd Magnar Strindmo from Melhus, Norway. This prime is the second largest known prime number, a 'mere' 141,125 digits smaller than the Mersenne prime found last August. Odd is an IT professional whose computers have been working with GIMPS since 1996 testing over 1,400 candidates. This calculation took 29 days on a 3.0 GHz Intel Core2 processor. The prime was independently verified June 12th by Tony Reix of Bull SAS in Grenoble, France..."
