Your claim that aesthetics matter is probably not wrong, but your evidence is utterly off the mark as for me. I've always hated skinnable applications. Take Winamp on windows. Fine application, but would be truly great if it had an easy to use interface by following standard windows practice. XMMS is even worse for usability on linux (you can barely read it on my screen).
