As for "when you think everyone else is an idiot...", and i'm not saying that you have inferred that everyone here is an idiot, but humour me and follow the comments here... the "everyone" seems to be saying that slack is [for the most part] stupid! maybe everyone saying that has some substance?
The issue i believe is... slack made it easier to sign-up without any tech knowledge; and without having to install anything... that as we have seen, comes at a cost... the cost is... the surveillance economy.
Sometimes, just sometimes, to every complex problem, there is a simple, elegant, beautiful, but totally wrong solution... in this case, the complex problem was easier packaging, simpler signups, saving of time when setting up IRC was not "part of someone's job"... the wrong solution is "slack".
