To top of off... it seems one thing that people are very consistent about is that Slack copied the WYSIWYG editor from MS - if so, this is hilarious as Slack is calling MS outdated, and then proceeding to copy exactly what MS do :) if anything, Slack is showing it's lack of ingenuity.

Got it. I didn't realise i was talking to a toolbag that thinks typing ls to get a directory listing is "technical magic". There's no such thing as a free lunch. If you want the benefit of privacy and security (and don't even start with the Slack keeps your data secure and private; it will sell it to the highest bidder just like fitbit did with google), then you might have to spend an hour for years of benefit. Oh, the tradeoff... now run along and spend that hour watching netflix you moron!

As for "when you think everyone else is an idiot...", and i'm not saying that you have inferred that everyone here is an idiot, but humour me and follow the comments here... the "everyone" seems to be saying that slack is [for the most part] stupid! maybe everyone saying that has some substance?

The issue i believe is... slack made it easier to sign-up without any tech knowledge; and without having to install anything... that as we have seen, comes at a cost... the cost is... the surveillance economy.

Sometimes, just sometimes, to every complex problem, there is a simple, elegant, beautiful, but totally wrong solution... in this case, the complex problem was easier packaging, simpler signups, saving of time when setting up IRC was not "part of someone's job"... the wrong solution is "slack".

Slack is just a blatent copy of irc but made a lot worse through single company centralisation and adding tracking (surveilence economy)... you'd be pretty stupid to use either. Just setup your own company irc node.
