Submission + - SPAM: China working on 'repression network' with unprecedented accuracy

schwit1 writes: Researchers at a Chinese university have revealed the results of an investigation aimed at creating a "repression network" which can identify cars from "customized paintings, decorations or even scratches" rather than by scanning its number plate.

Essentially, it works by learning from what it sees, allowing it to differentiate between cars (or humans) by spotting small differences between them.

Submission + - Almost 300 people join class-action lawsuit for age discrimination at Google (bizjournals.com) 1

BrookHarty writes: 269 people have joined a class-action lawsuit against Google claiming they were discriminated against in the workplace based on their age. The lawsuit originated in 2015 with plaintiff Robert Heath and was certified as a class-action in 2016. Google has stated it has implemented policies to stop age discrimination but still has an average employee age of 29.

12-Year-Old Sikh Boy Arrested In Texas After Bringing a Power Bag To School (salon.com) 954

AaronW writes: A 12-year-old Sikh boy in Dallas, Texas was accused by another student of bringing a bomb to school. Apparently he had a powerbag; a backpack with a built-in phone charger. Rather than send him to the principal's office or ask for an explanation, the teacher instead called the police, who promptly arrested him and threw him into a juvenile detention center for three days. The school promptly suspended Armaan, and the police released him after three days but required that he wear an ankle bracelet. Verifiable details are scant, for this case — probably because the whole thing seems to revolve around some 12-year-old kids talking to each other. Armaan's story is that another student said his bag looked like it had a bomb in it, and that he would report it. Believing it to be a joke, Armaan laughed. The police say he "admitted" to joking about a bomb, and they insist their actions were justified. A school district spokesman says the family was notified, but the parents say they had to dial 911 to find somebody who could tell them where their son was being held.

The Forecastfox (fix version) on Firefox actually brought me back to using the browser because that extension is just so much better than every other weather extension. I'll keep using Firefox, even though it's noticeably slower then Chrome in some areas and tends to lock up for a couple seconds at times, just for the extensions it offers. That's how much those extensions mean to some users. If those disappear I don't see any reason to keep using Firefox, unfortunately.

Limited shared data? Now I start wandering into the cloud and Dropbox seems pretty good to me so far. Never actually leaves my hard drive but is available for others I choose to play with. Am hoping no one ever hacks that account but I knew the risks when I put it there.

Except that at that point it truly is in The Cloud on Dropbox's servers, you just still have a copy on your local drive.

It's gotten to the point where it's almost odd for me to see a desktop now. At my office only a few people still have desktops because they're not up for a replacement yet. Those that are get a laptop. I've got a laptop now that sits docked most of the time, connected to my external mouse/keyboard and dual monitors. Same thing at home - my laptop replaced my desktop, but when it's time to do Real Work it gets connected to my external mouse/keyboard and dual monitors. Aside from serious gaming I don't see anyone buying desktops anymore, and I can't wait until the day when my phone can be docked just like my laptop and run real apps like Photoshop, Lightroom, and even a full browser rather than the mobile touch-friendly version.

That article was actually very popular when it came out because it's entirely built of questions. If he had just slammed Fieri it wouldn't have gotten near as many views as it did, but because of the way it was written it appeared on sites that it never would have otherwise. It's marketing, not an English journal.
