Comment Depends (Score 3, Insightful) 535

In principle, YES Google crossed the line, clearly. (Reasons are already espoused in other threads, too tiresome to repeat.) In practice, it probably depends on whether end users perceive a clear change in the performance of their PCs.

If the app isn't visually intrusive and doesn't hork throughput, I would guess most won't care one way or the other. Problem is, if the updater causes problems, the simplest option is to uninstall the software -- and who will reinstall it later?

What ticks me off is that with this choice Google seems to be catering those with a surfeit of bandwidth... I never have enough bandwdith, never; now you want to steal a slice of what little I have for your own purposes? Bad Google, bad, evil Google!

I envision a conversation between two typical users:

"Hey, you seen that new Google Earth? Looks cool."

"Yeah, but if you install it nothing else on your computer will work right."

"Oh, dude... screw that."

Does anyone else find it interesting that the report itself costs $1,000? "Hey, it must be worth something, I paid for it!" Or, "I paid for it!"

This reminds me of a survey I read about somewhere... can't seem to find it. One question read (something like), "You pay ten dollars for movie tickets but, halfway through the feature, you decide the movie really stinks. Do you (a) stay for the rest of it so as to get your money's worth, or (b) leave immediately?" According to the source which I have not yet found, people who were fiscally successful tended to answer (b).

Time to leave the {insert your favorite software here} Movieplex, people!

Mandriva's Open Letter To Steve Ballmer 357

An anonymous reader writes "An entry on the Mandriva Blog, written by Mandriva CEO François Bancilhon, says that the Nigerian government, after ordering thousands of Classmate PCs with Mandriva Linux installed, has suddenly decided that they will instead install Windows. They will pay for the pre-loaded Mandriva Linux on the low-cost computing devices intended for children in the developing world, but immmediately replace the OS. The blog doesn't quite use the 'B' word but does suggest that this was not a decision that the Nigerian government made on its own."

Journal Journal: Bush rally requires 'loyalty oath'

Story's a little old, but: the Associated Press reports that people attending a Bush/Cheney rally in New Mexico were required to sign a "loyalty oath," giving their names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses and proclaiming their intention to vote for President Bush come November. Folks who asked were told the information was for "Secret Service stuff," and folks who di

Journal Journal: status check

Haven't blogged for some time... I like message boards, but sharing intimate thoughts globally seems too close to exhibitionism for me.

Today I began organizing my expense reports for the fiscal year, and I didn't keep them as well as I ought. I do this too often I'm afraid.

Journal Journal: Is Slashdot cutting the cheese?

As much as I love Slashdot, is it really for me? I love the articles, but as far as I can see, the community dealing with issues more directly in a forum or something similar is lacking. I will be turning more towards developments in my own personal site/forums. I have several people (including myself) working hard to make the site/forums something to keep up with and check. Here's some URL's if someone sees this.

Journal Journal: Good friends

HOW GOOD! Meeting up with Jessica and Andy here in a bit; some great friends I haven't seen since graduation. We had been talking about getting together but just haven't. I ran into Jessica a few days ago and we planned on meeting up today. Cool.

I have brought Susan's rank up to #3 on the {X][S} server. I went (overall for the evening) 48-4 and approx 40 were headshots. I have done so, knowingly bringing kill streak only 14 kills behind my own. I have done so also improving a name on her WonID to 34:1 ratio; a 3400% effiecency increase from her last record. Only Susan and Trey know about this. We'll see how this reacts with the community. p.s. Of course, my rank still holds a strong #2.

Don't think that I care about subscribing... I'm broke anyway. I mean seriously broke, broke in the MIDWEST. (And that means something.)
