Mind you at some point it'll become a moot point due to the use of cashless transactions. I can't remember the last time I made a cash transaction, and that's not just going back to last week, it's going back to the start of the year.

Me too... thanks to Covid-19 most of the businesses in the land of Oz don't take cash anymore.... but spare a thought for your local drug dealer! he's really going to struggle in a cashless society...

For most people, we reached 'peak desktop' when SSD's became widespread and cheap enough to be the primary drive in a reasonable system. They're using their PC for web browsing and not much else. In the PC side of the equation, we still have to make the jump to high resolution displays. Apple might me there already but the majority of Windows users are still at the same 1920x1080 resolution they were 5 years ago.

Nanoresonators Create Ultra-High-Res Displays 231

TuurlijkNiet writes with this excerpt from Linux for Devices: "Eat your heart out, 'Retina display.' A new technology unveiled yesterday will allow creating pixels eight times smaller than the ones on Apple's iPhone 4, eliminate the need for polarizer layers, and allow screens to make much more efficient use of available light, say University of Michigan researchers. ... The pixels in the nanoresonator displays are about ten times smaller than those on a typical computer screen, and about eight times smaller than the pixels on the iPhone 4, which are about 78 microns, according to Guo. Such pixel densities could make the technology useful in projection displays, as well as wearable, bendable or extremely compact displays, according to the researchers."

That's what all the carriers are really shit scared about, right?... just like the ISP's. They want to be content carriers not just dumb pipes. It doesn't matter to the carriers if they're charging a premium for voice, video or facebook, the carriers want to charge you MORE for highly desired content. It'll all wash out in the next 20 years. By 2030 all data will be equal. The battle now is about the fat profits the carriers make between now and then.
