Comment Is anyone even making good laptops? (Score 1) 47

My Dell XPS 13 laptop is almost 5 years old. I really *want* to upgrade, but I just can't find any laptop that is good enough to replace it. I really want a laptop with a matte OLED screen, 120hz refresh rate and at least 700 nits of brightness so I can finally use it outside, AMD CPU & GPU, 32 gigs of ram while we're at it, a chassis that isn't too bulky, plastic-y or horribly ugly, a decent battery and preferably no realtek wifi card. The only thing I can consistently find are ones with OLED screens & high refresh rates, but all the other things are super rare.

I really love the idea behind Matrix! How it's a federated system, so you can run your own server but still seamlessly talk to people on other networks. Kind of like e-mail. The only downside is the client support. Element.io is trying to do *a lot* and doesn't really succeed at anything.

Totally. Even though I speak (Flemish) Dutch, I always use the English subtitles because it's the literal transcript of what is said. Dutch subtitles often contain some minor errors, but those are enough to draw me out of the story. Another issue is that Dutch subtitles are often, well, very Dutch. This can be very annoying for someone from Flanders.

I got my first English class in school when I was 13 years old. I was already browsing the web, chatting on IRC, playing video games, ... in English long before this. Now, did I learn perfect English by just watching TV? Probably not. But the young version of me definitely thought so, though. That confidence + the hours and hours of consuming English content did a lot more than the measly 2 hours of English class every week.

It's the same in Belgium. For a topup of 15 euros I get 1gb of data, 1000 sms and 1 hour of calls to make. Belgium is actually one of the most expensive countries in the EU of mobile phone subscriptions, and this one I have is the cheapest of the lot. I always found it fascinating you have to pay to receive a message in the U.S. People would scream bloody murder over here. The EU has even made some laws as to how much a text message can cost.
