Comment 3+4 = 7 years of security updates (Score 1) 67

3 years of full OS updates (which include security updates), followed by 4 years of security updates only; 7 years total.

We keep an old S5 mini (release year 2014) in our family room to control the TV and cast Netflix. It got a security update last month. I was pretty surprised as I don't remember when I last saw one come in.

Samsung Blames Galaxy SIII Burn On "External Energy Source" 169

MojoKid writes "Samsung has some great news for Galaxy SIII smartphone owners. As it turns out, your mobile device isn't at risk of overheating to the point where it catches on fire and burns through its casing, as a forum member at Boards.ie claimed was the case with his Galaxy SIII a couple of weeks ago. [Note: And has since retracted.] Fire Investigations UK (FIUK), an independent third-party organization, assisted Samsung with looking into the matter, and here's what they concluded: 'The energy source responsible for generating the heat has been determined as external to the device... the device was not responsible for the cause of the fire,' FIUK said in a statement. 'The only way it was possible to produce damage similar to the damage recorded within the owner's damaged device was to place the devices or component parts within a domestic microwave.'"

BBC Astronomer Misses Meteor During Live Show 116

krou writes "BBC astronomer Mark Thompson wasn't having a good night for the BBC's Stargazing Live show. He turned to the camera to complain of poor cloud visibility and a lack of activity in the sky ... only for a meteor to shoot past in the background. A rather sheepish Thompson said, 'I must admit I was oblivious to it. I think I'm probably the only person in the entire country who didn't see it.' (YouTube video of the original live footage)."

Yup, I get that - internal network name lookup starts to fail, IP addresses are fine; reboot the router fixes the problem.

Happens every few weeks/months.

The router is a Billion 7404VGO - don't know what the OS is, but it isn't Linux. It's easier to do the off and on again than to jump through the flaming hoops of persuading tech support to report it as a bug, especially as it's only very recent firmwares that have allowed internal name lookups anyway!
