The Programmers Go Coding Two-by-Two — Hurrah? 318

theodp writes "The Wall Street Journal reports that pair programming is all the rage at tech darlings Facebook and Square. Its advocates speak in glowing terms of the power of pair programming, saying paired coders can catch costly software errors and are less likely to waste time surfing the Web. 'The communication becomes so deep that you don't even use words anymore,' says Facebook programmer Kent Beck. 'You just grunt and point.' Such reverent tones prompted Atlassian to poke a little fun at the practice with Spooning, an instructional video in which a burly engineer sits on a colleague's lap, wraps his arms around his partner's waist and types along with him hand over hand."

Comment !speed (Score 1) 418

The article uses speed and number of transistors interchangeably, which is misleading. From what I can tell, they are talking about chips with 10^16 billion transistors on them, not chips clocking at 4x10^16 GHz, which is what most people think of when they hear "speed".

Even if this were proved to be accurate, would it be legally admissible? If you unlawfully took evidence from someone's residence, it would cause a mistrial... How could you justify taking information from inside someone's head without their consent to use against them in court?

What If the Apollo Program Had Continued? 389

proslack writes "The die had been cast years before Apollo 11 had even reached the moon. In the late 1960s, the Vietnam war was straining US finances. A fatal fire on the Apollo launch pad in January 1967 had blotted NASA's copybook. The Soviet moon effort seemed to be going nowhere. In the budget debates during the summer of 1967, Congress refused NASA's request to fund an extended moon programme. What if things had been different that summer? Suppose Congress had granted NASA's wish, then fast-forward 40-odd years..." A nice little what-if sort of story that makes sorta nostalgic for a non-existent present.
