Comment Hostile work environment (Score 1) 675

I would approach your HR group and ask about code of conduct and business ethics policies. I would also ask about what constitutes a "hostile" work environment and see if this "threat" falls into that category. I would also make it clear to HR that you feel your work environment has become too hostile for you to work your last three weeks. What you do from there would depend on their actions. That's what I would do.

Submission + - Bionic Contact Lens may lead to overlay displays (uwnews.org)

pfman writes: "A University of Washington researcher has developed a contact lens including circuitry and a matrix of LEDs. Although not yet a working prototype, this may be a foundation for terminator/robocop style overlay displays in which computer graphics could be superimposed on your normal vision."

Feed Science Daily: Separating The Brain's 'Bad' From 'Good' Iron (sciencedaily.com)

Chemists are developing ways to bind up iron in the brain to combat the neurological devastation of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. The key is to weed out potentially destructive forms of iron that generate harmful free radicals while leaving benign forms of iron alone to carry out vital functions in the body.

Feed Engadget: In-car GPS jammer subverts mobile tracking devices (engadget.com)

If you're the type who just may be the victim of undercover GPS tracking (read: promiscuous), you should give some serious thought to this one. This simple cigarette adapter plug-in reportedly "knocks out GPS logging or GPS tracking systems that may be operating in your vehicle," and considering that it sports a two-to-four meter operating range, just about every automobile outside of an 18-wheeler (or limousine) should be covered. Unfortunately, there's no word yet on how much this potential life-saver will cost, but its slated to ship "soon" to the devious and uber-paranoid sects.

Submission + - Hacking Firefox: The secrets of about:config

jcatcw writes: While Firefox is very customizable, many of its settings aren't in the Options. Each setting is named and stored as a string, integer or Boolean in a file called prefs.js, accessed via about:config from the nav bar. Computerworld provides instructions on 20 tweaks for speeding up page loads, making tabs behave, reducing memory drain and making the interface behave the way you want. Customization also comes through the must-have FF extensions, but be sure to skip these.

Submission + - Ethanol demand is increasing food prices worldwide

hereisnowhy writes: The rising demand for corn as a source of ethanol-blended fuel is largely to blame for increasing food costs around the world, the CBC reports. Increased prices for ethanol have already led to bigger grocery bills for the average American — an increase of $47 US compared to July 2006. In Mexico last year, corn tortillas, a crucial source of calories for 50 million poor people, doubled in price. The increase forced the government to introduce price controls. The move to ethanol-blended fuel is based in part on wide-spread belief that it produces cleaner emissions than regular gasoline. But a recent Environment Canada study found no statistical difference between the greenhouse gas emissions of regular unleaded fuel and 10 per cent ethanol-blended fuel. Environmental groups have argued that producing ethanol — whether from corn, beets, wheat or other crops — takes more energy than is derived from the product.
