Comment Mobile notifications (Score 1) 147

It's funny no one has mentioned yet the deal with mobile notifications and this is a tricky one.

I've used Tapo cameras before and I like the fact that you can configure them so that they send you a notification on your phone when they detect "motion" in your footage. This is also a free feature (free tier can use the cloud so long as you don't store the whole footage). So the point is, a burglar shows up and then the camera's motion-detection fires up, and you get a mobile notification, so then you click in the app and then you can see what's happening in real-time. If you don't see anything you can even rewind the small recording that happened when motion was detected (this short recording can also be accessed via free tier cloud service out of the box).

But THE REAL KICKER is, what if power goes down? Most cameras don't send you a notification about this because if power goes down then they cannot ping any server. The fix should be obvious here: the server should check if it hasn't received any pings for X number of minutes then it should send you a notification to your phone, a notification that doesn't highlight a motion-detection event but a power-loss event, BUT! MOST VENDORS DON'T HAVE THIS FEATURE! So then burglars that are sufficiently prepared with wifi-signal-jammers *AND* cut your power off will almost always get away. Unless you find a camera that you can use via PoE and also gives you power-loss notification events! Any vendor out there that supports this? A friend of mine has told me that the brand Eufy supports this so I just ordered one but it didn't arrive yet so I cannot certify 100% yet that this is the case (the model I got is: https://www.amazon.es/dp/B086L... ).

What a shitty take.

Yes, it was a shitty take, but not because public transport is shit (it might be shit, in your country, or around where you live, but that's not an inherent aspect of public transport everywhere). His take was shit because an electric-powered infrastructure for private cars is better than a gasoline-dependent one.
