Comment Re:Who created the consent banners? (Score 3) 102

I've never seen a cookie banner ask for consent to collect and store my IP address. If that is their reason, they completely failed to obtain consent in a manner that meets the law.

The reason for the banners are simple - a court case ruled that cookies are covered by GDRP, but they haven't explicitly ruled on other tracking mechanisms. So ad companies pushed the minimum and most annoying method of conforming with that ruling without changing their practices, and continue to ignore the fact that all the other tracking they are doing without consent is blatantly illegal.

That just means Google is now operating in exactly the same manner that Microsoft used to be when they had dominance over consumer device operating systems. Google now has dominance in the mobile market with Android, and is using that to shove Chrome down people's throats. Personally, the first thing I do with any new phone is download Firefox, just like I did (and still do) with new computers. As the statistics show, though, the vast majority of people don't bother to do that so whatever is the default is what they use. The right and fair thing to do would be to stop them from abusing their monopoly power by offering a choice of browsers at time of install, and not favor their own browser in any way. That would have been the thing to force MS to do as well back when they were being sued for abuse of monopoly power after taking down Netscape with the same tactic. Unfortunately, it didn't happen then and it isn't happening now either. So, Google will continue to dominate the market unless and until some other highly disruptive technology comes along to unseat the current smartphone market and gives another player a chance to enter and eventually dominate the market in a similar fashion.

Its already treating them as bookmarks though.. I just wish mozilla would fix smaller things like giving a site storage size limit that actually worked and didn't just ignore it and also wouldn't churn disk as much for no reason at all.

I suffered from sleep apnea for many years. Breathing problems often triggered nightmares, several times a night. A CPAP machine changed my life, I could finally get a whole nights sleep, and the nightmares stopped. I can still recognize an apnea nightmare, which I get if I don't use the machine. Sleep apnea is known to increase many medical problems and to shorten life. I guess other conditions could also provoke nightmares.

The Switch 2 pricing was announced well after Trump was elected, and undoubtedly included *some* additional markup for tariff increases from the get go, since he had been talking about tariffs the whole campaign, even if it has been a continual game of roulette trying to predict the *exact* tariffs. So it makes sense that the Switch 1 prices would be more sensitive to the tariffs than the Switch 2.

On the one hand, yes, people must be paid for their work.

But on the other hand, the people who actually -did- the work in this case are not the ones setting the price, and they are not the ones getting the money. Music creators don't see a nickle of licensing, most of the time.

If an Applebees in Podunk Nebraska plays a Hendrix song, does his estate or his heirs get the money? Or is it some conglomerate that acquired the rights in a hostile takeover 20 years ago? Yep, the conglomerate.

And a quick reminder, the owner of the Podunk Applebees is not the one who ultimately pays for that license fee. YOU are. Because costs are passed on to the customer.

Thus we have a situation where people are being gouged for license fees and the musicians are still getting nothing.

Things are never as easy as one might hope.

Due to a disability, I can only type with my right hand. It definitely slows my typing. But, I have learned to work around this. For example, I use "sticky keys" which lets me type Shift, Ctrl, Alt, and release those keys. so, Ctrl+C is typed by pressing Ctrl then releasing it, then pressing C then releasing it. The regular way also works while "sticky keys" is enabled.
