Journal singularity's Journal: Headache, Cars, and Computer Names 7

I... have... a... headache.

In other news, I went to the Chicago Auto Show today. It was nice to see the cars, but I wish I had been able to go on a weekday. There were simply too many people. Moving around was difficult enough, looking at a car was almost impossible at times.

I really like the new Mini Cooper S. I figure to be driving one in a couple of years. It might make up for selling the Bug this past summer.

Friday night went well. I am not sure *how* well, but I suppose I will see soon enough.

Three weeks until the new computer is ordered.

I am taking submissions for names for the new computer. I am really at a loss to come up with a good name. My previous computers were called Kosmos and Singularity. My laptop is called GoLightly.

I am promising a free pizza to the submitter of the winning name.

Current leaders are Manifold and Borealis. Reply to this journal entry (Sarah from Scholastic Bowl, this is your big chance) with any submissions.

Final judging will take place on or about 1 March 2002.

My decision will be final.

My headache is getting better thanks to some well-timed Tylenol.

Headache, Cars, and Computer Names

  • For me the big decision about computer names is the them. At home I went with railroading terms/names and even some sub themes. Example: steam and smoke are sparc stations, century, daylight, and hudson being linux boxen and there are a few other things hanging around like a little old sparc box nammed cinder and a windows box nammed mikado. Over all theme of trains, sub themes of exhaust things for sparcs, famous train names for linux boxen, and specific wheel configurations of engines for windows boxes.

At school they went with dead people who helped computer science / math. Newton, Turing, Fermat, Euler, Boole, Noether, Kleene, Gauss, Grace, Tarski, Post, etc... Although interesting it does have it's limits so long as the majority of CS people are still alive.

I suggest / propose a theme - if not to rename current boxen, but to move towards with future ones. I've been thinking of a transformers based theme: Optimus, Grimlock, Ironhide, Megatron, etc.. or a G.I. Joe theme: Barbeque, Bazooka, Duke, Dusty, Falcon, Flint, etc... There are possibilities of sub-themes in those since there were doods in the transformers who could combine to form biger things, and there's the whole good-guys / bad-guys / other-guys (the ones whose side was determined from episode to episode) groups that both share. I guess He Man and She Ra are also applicable, but other than Skellator I just can't remember names. A friend of mine is using Iron Chef as his theme, however I find remembering the exact spelling of fukisan (is that even right?) a tad hard, and I think there is a smaller set of names from this group as compared to G.I. Joe. Another friend is using characters from the series Reboot with Tron mixed in.

Obvious things to avoid are long names, I nammed a firewall tehachapi for just that reason. ::grin::

But, if you're not up for a theme, I'll list some names that just don't have a theme:

nikstlitselpmur (read backwards, good firewall name)
    beef
buchni (if you're not from the country formerly known as Yugoslavia I'm not going to explain)
    schlumper
coyboyneal (just seeing if you're paying attention)
    eegah (MST3K)
    tomservo
    crow
pixel (hehe, good name for a cat: it's a literary reference...)
    sprite
    aeolus (harp, flux, mythology, whatever)
    thalia
malpomenia (sorry, got into a mythology rut there)
aurora (lights, or place of Wayne's World!)
    horsehead
nebula (just keeping with your current possible theme of space stuff)

I guess I could list more, but I've got major homework to work on.
  • ok well i dont have time right now to paste in the whole dictionairy like the previous person but here are a few suggestions nerdbowl since you mention schoolastic bowl and thats what my team called it when i was on it Mach 5 you cant go wrong with speed racer and heliocentric already did a fair job of covering gi joe and transformers not leaving me with much otherwise i would have recomended grimlock Rufus since you seem to miss your beetle why not name your computer after it ThisIsNotAPC casue it is a PC it would be oh so hillarious plus its hard to read and just looks like strung together letters to idiots like me. i would recomend some bad puns casue you strike me as the type of person that would find them oh so hillarious but im short on wit now and probably always will be
