I usually use a short phrase. That helps mitigate ambiguity, and it doesn't have to be anything terribly complex - fixed expressions or other common phrases work just fine.
I know what you mean about "feeling"; it's one of the common problems of translation, but since I always know exactly what I mean when I pick a phrase to translate, it's not too difficult to remember which translation I decided on.
