Comment FreeBSD Rant (Score 1) 103

FreeBSD has been around for a long time and I am surprised when more people don't get on the band wagon and support it. Does anyone know if they have FreeBSD support for virtual machines like vmware esx or gsx? FreeBSD is a great server environment for anybody that's looking for something easy and secure.

What's New In FreeBSD 7.0 103

blackbearnh writes "FreeBSD is about to release the much-anticipated version 7, and as usual there's a comprehensive interview with over two dozen of the major contributors over at O'Reilly's ONLamp site. Federico Biancuzzi interviewed the developers to discuss all the details of FreeBSD 7.0: networking and SMP performance, SCTP support, the new IPSEC stack, virtualization, monitoring frameworks, ports, storage limits and a new journaling facility, what changed in the accounting file format, jemalloc(), ULE, and more."

Nicaraguan Children Get Perfect Season Shirts

Ever wonder what happens to all the 'winner' memorabilia that gets printed for losing teams? It turns out a lot of it is donated to help out poor children in Latin America and Africa. This year hundreds of children in the southern city of Diriamba, Nicaragua will be sporting Patriots perfect season jerseys and caps. Maurice Castillo, coach of the Diriamba city youth football league said, "This is a big deal to these kids. These jerseys mean more to them than you can imagine." Unfortunately this gratitude didn't extend to the scrimmage between the junior league team and the once powerful Pats, where the kids upset the Patriots 21-10.

Journal Journal: Trying to Manage IT

Dear /. After reading an article in the Australian IT News about how some companies IT sections are moving away from the traditional Waterfall model. I got to thinking, what model is best for more hardware orientated administrators, you know those grind it out day by day system and network administrators in large schools and corporate institutes etc? The Waterfall model is also based more for so

Journal Journal: A glimpse into the lives of sysadmins and users 5

I had an epiphany earlier today: I think I realize why many sysadmins come off as being assholes. It stems from the fact that for them, computers are easy, rather than some magic box with blinky lights on it. Another thing to consider is some people (sysadmins) see new things as a challange or a problem to be solved while others (joe users) see problems/change on the computer as a scary thing. Change is bad, because it means they can't get their work done.

Anti-Terrorism and the Death of the Chemistry Set 860

An anonymous reader writes "A recent unfortunate casualty of anti-terrorism laws is the home chemistry set. Once deemed the gift that saved Christmas, most Slashdotters probably remember early childhood experimentation with one of the many pre-packaged chemistry sets that were on the market. Unfortunately the FBI has decided that home chemistry sets are a threat to national security and they are rapidly disappearing from the market entirely. Those that remain are shallow boring versions of the old kits."
