You are correct. On the surface, you can beat a child into submission and he will definitely be well behaved.

Unfortunately, it also stops children from developing properly. If kids are particularly well behaved, they're not properly exploring the world they live in.

According to scientists who study such things, the sheer number of words spoken to a child directly influence how well the childs brain will develop. Positive words and praises are far more beneficial than negative words and admonishments, as they encourage the child to keep learning and developing rather than being "well behaved" and blind to the world. Kids may be less respectful nowadays, but they're also more likely to contribute more to society later in life.

I'm sure you get some sort of self satisfaction by beating handicaps into your children, though.

You probably think that's funny, but I appled to and got accepted to Central Michigan University in 2001 and decided not to attend because of a bad conversation with a sysadmin where he told me students should not have the ability to host any type of content. I went to (relatively) neighboring Grand Vallley State University (gvsu.edu) instead, and I'm glad I did.
