silent_rock's Journal: switzerland

I'm in Zurich for the second night. I thought I was gonna die on the way here. I started feeling flu symptoms during the first flight to Dulles. There was a group of middle-schoolers on the plane and E and I were sitting right on the border of their group. I felt ill all the way to Zurich. Then we arrived at 8am and went to the WSL institute to talk to people about their research. I excused myself and collapsed on a cot for a couple hours. Then I hobbled around and looked like a sick sick bastard for the rest of the day. I just wanted my mommy. But she is very far away.

Today we met at 7am to visit the Illgraben, where there are some debris flow monitoring systems. I felt ill. But being in the Swiss Alps is fantastic. We discussed inserting some erodible plates on a check dam. We discussed my research some over dinner, which made me anxious. (dumb). Tomorrow we go to a different site, E's site. Then Sunday we drive to vienna for the conference.

Switzerland is a strange amalgamation of people. I don't like being a stupid American, but oh well. There is nothing funny to tell because I have no sense of humor when I am ill. Fake smile used a lot to feign health.

I don't feel queasy or achy or tingly anymore, just sore throat coming on. Sorry for the hypochondriac entry. Thanks for any news from the the other hemisphere.
