I'm one of the RMIT ITS managers who was at the event and want to apologise if any offence was taken by the laughter, it certainly wasn't directed at Linux or Linux users and was more towards ourselves and the challenges we face to support the standard commercial flavours let alone linux and its various distributions.

We do have a refresh project for wireless running right now and this week we'll be undertaking some initial testing in preparation to release by semester 2, I'm pretty sure it's an MSCHAPv2/PEAP setup but don't my word for gospel as I'm an ex-tech who's forgetting more than he remembers these days. I'm also pretty sure transparent proxies are part of the deal but I haven't seen confirmation of that yet. Things will change at RMIT for the better over the next few years, we've got a big hill to climb to get there like you said but with the right people and attitudes we'll get there.
