Comment Not Memorization (Score 1) 319

There is a misnomer that O chem is mainly focused on memorization. A student will never excel in this course focused on memorizing every single possible reaction. Not only is that impossible, you're better off using studying time memorizing the exceptions and less common reactions. The majority of learning O chem is intuitive and built right into the principles of general chemistry (electronegativity, electron affinity, inter and intra molecular interactions, acidity, etc). For instance I will never have to "memorize" that a chlorine atom is a good leaving group because it has high electron affinity and thus a strong nucelophile. As someone pointed out, if your general chemistry upbringing was poor, you will have a bad time in O chem. They do re-hash some stuff, but one should already know periodic trends by the time they enter the course.
