Journal shankar2k's Journal: Fellowship! 2
I just found out that I will be receiving a fellowship from the Computational Science and Engineering program! This means that I will receive a full tuition-waiver and stipend from the CSE program for next year, and I don't have to teach!
In order to receive the fellowship I had to write the following six page proposal. It took a fair amount of doing to get it all right, and that's been among the reasons I haven't been updating this darn blog. I was really hesitant about applying for the fellowship because I guess I've felt that my resume and research didn't compare to all the smarties around here. I was even less sure because this year, thirty people applied for eight fellowships, twice as many applicants as last year. Also, one of my labmates was also applying for the fellowship, and because they wanted to spread the eight among diverse research topics, I was certain I would fail. So it kind of irked me that I would spend all this time writing this silly proposal and then not get anything for it. But I guess it worked out!
Now for the not so good news. My adviser has a boatload of money now, so if I didn't get the fellowship, I would have been funded (without having to teach) next year anyway. Why is that not so good news? Essentially this fellowship is saving my adviser money instead of netting me money. But its all good. It looks very good on my resume and all that.
My parents had my horoscope read by our family priest while they were in India, and he said that the curse of seven years would be simultaneously leaving me, my father, and my grandfather by the end of April. It does really seem as if my luck is turning around right now. Let's see if more good things lie ahead.
I am so happy for you! (Score:2)
Hopefully, though, instead of using your fortune to save him money, your advisor will turn this extra money into an opportunity for another student. That would be the most awesome outcome or, failing that, perhaps the extra money can be put toward extra research tools.
I am very happy for you.
