Wouldn't really agree with the analysis that "all artists are in it for the $". Yes music is a product but there are a number of musical organisations who are of like mind "free speech/beer" motto. Labels need cash to get music out there, while MP3's are an excellent format Joe Soap will still want his CD/LP...

Some labels operate at very basic margins so that music can be heard, many go under because taxes and sales commission from stores are too expensive.
A good eg are punk labels like Dischord and Alternative Tentacles who post "do not buy if priced over $10" stickers on their albums .
This is not restricted to any genre either, Ninjatune a UK hip-hop/jazz label operate a "double tracks for single tax" policy on label compilations and PE put tracks up on their website for free before the label caught up with them and sent them back to the salt mines.

If you still think PE are corporate label slaves get yourself a copy of "Nation of Millions" or "Fear of a Black Planet"
