Comment Scrum is Not Agile! (Score 2) 152

All of the negative comments, requirements and anecdotes about "Agile" that were written in the original article are actually about SCRUM, not "Agile". The Scrum methodology has bastardized Agile into a formula of "short sequential waterfall" sprints that provide management something to manage and measure, giving them a familiar sense of security and false sense of progress. I have been on Scrum teams that have created / manipulated great-looking numbers, velocities and charts, but in the end did not deliver anything useable and/or valuable to the business. It's been quite a while since I re-read the original Agile Manifesto and the Twelve Principles, but they ring as true today as they did 20 years ago. I want to cry and pull out my hair when I encounter new developers who have been trained / brainwashed to think that Scrum and Agile are equivalent, and that if you are not strictly following the Scrum formula then you are not "being Agile". As Robert Martin has said many times, Agile is an Adjective and not a Noun; it is a Philosophy and set of Principles, not a Formula. Scrum is truly "Management's Revenge" on the Agile Philosophy.
