You cannot expect the warranty cycle to provide you with a new, faster, bigger drive. They don't do that.

Not entirely true. I purchased a 4 GB Western Digital hard drive in mid-1997 which failed after 6 months. WD warranty provided me with a new 5 GB hard drive because they stopped making the 4 GB version. Happy to say the 5 GB drive is still running fine for over 4 years now.

It's a crapshoot.
