Depends on the position that you hold. At my last job I gave two weeks and they asked me to leave that day. They stated it was because of my position - a network administrator. They said that as soon as an employee gives two weeks notice, they consider that person no longer an employee and thus will treat them as such. I was pissed because they let me go without paying me for those two weeks. Many companies actually do let employees go based upon position, but most still return the courtesy with paying them for the two weeks. (That is what a good friend of mine told me - he is a VP of HR at a M&T Bank - so a credible source) So, based upon that experience, it got me thinking - what will I do the next time I move on to a new company... be the bigger person and still give two weeks - or screw the company because of my last experience. I will opt for the first, as I will be able to leave with my head held high.
