You're making a huge assumption that a song is WORTH more than 99 cents and a book is worth more than 9.99. If people valued them as higher there wouldn't be a drop off in sales. Regardless of the psychology, a market sets prices all by itself (assuming consumers are "rational" and the government stays out of the market). I can tell you a #2 pencil is $9.99 all day but you're not going to pay it. Why?

Agreed. This is why we have mandatory attendance and this is why we have distracted students. If I have a professor that would rather do research than teach and subsequently give a crappy lecture, why do i want to show up? I don't want him to waste my time but mandatory attendance might force me to go. If I have a laptop at least I can be productive during those 2 hours that would otherwise be wasted. It's all a big scam involving teachers and students being in a room they don't want to be in.

What China realised and the USSR didn't, IMO, is that they could forget the cold war and essentially buy the west with the west's own money. /crazy theory

Maybe they realized it and already succeeded. I would argue they bought or influenced every major media company, pushed a socialist agenda, and now we have a socialist president.
