Asus Promises 12-Hour Battery Life In New High-End Laptop 190

Asus' new high-end laptop could finally be the traveler's best accoutrement, touting twelve-hour battery life thanks to intelligent, second-by-second switching between the two GPUs and automatic, on-the-fly re-clocking of the Intel Core i7 CPU. All this also comes in with a price tag of just over $1,000. "ASUS's solution is different because it's user-transparent; even a novice user will get the fullest possible benefit because the laptop itself is deciding when to switch. The same principle applies to the dynamic CPU clocking. ASUS includes a desktop widget to track CPU clock speed. While using the UL80JT, I could see it moving up and down with what I did; up with program openings and CPU-intensive processes, and way down at idle. Between the GPU switching, dynamic clocking, and ASUS's other power management features, the UL80JT manages to consume less than half as much power as the unibody Macbook while browsing."

I agree that on the face of it this looks like it won't work, but I can see many mitigating circumstances that means it just _might_ work.
I think there's a small chance that they might actually be able to pull it off, and if they do it really is a game-changer.

A couple of things that makes me hesitant to call everyone "retarded" if they don't dismiss this before it has even seen the light of day:
- They are aiming for The Long Tail of gaming, and I think it's easy to underestimate just how gigantic the amount of cash is in this tail
- Not ALL games are hyper timing sensitive
- Multiplexing hardware means the same computer can serve Stan in Portland and Sanjay in New Delhi at different times a day (but admittedly only if there are good pipes or the game is not super lag sensitive).
- Computer power can be spent or sold in other ways when it's not used for the OnLive gaming system (just look at how Amazon has managed to use their knowledge of scalability into a nice side business that doesn't involve books)
- For the most timing sensitive games (1st person FPS), you remove the client-to-client lag, which means the server can run a single cohesive view of the world, and pipe that to the players (so you get rid of one type of lag, which might allow for the server-to-client-video lag with no problem)
- If this gets big or they have good partner deals from the beginning, games might get engineered specifically for this network topology from the game developers side, which might take steps to minimize lag problems (I can come up with quite a few ideas just off the top of my head)
- If the video algorithm is designed for gaming (as it is), they can degrade quality in the video compression in a smart way to keep the lag to a minimum - who cares if the leaves on the trees in your peripheral vision are a bit blocky when you're in a firefight in Crysis)
- They have a few pretty strong industry profiles on their company roster

That said, I am of course also highly sceptical, but I see a sliver of a chance that they might pull it off. And if they do, I really think it will be a game changer (pun intended).

Average Gamer Is 35, Fat and Bummed 439

kamapuaa writes "According to a study published in the upcoming October issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, the average US video game player is 35 years old, overweight, and tends toward depression. Specifically, female video game players tended towards depression, while males tended towards large BMIs. While the study itself points to several conclusions, one researcher noted: '... habitual use of video games as a coping response may provide a genesis for obsessive-compulsive video-game playing, if not video-game addiction.'" On the flip side, the Washington Post is running a story about the mental health benefits of playing video games.

Windows 7 To Sell In UK For Half the US Price 487

An anonymous reader writes "In the UK, a full version of Windows 7 Home Premium is going to cost less than half the price Americans will have to pay, and in fact less than Americans have to pay just for the upgrade-only edition. Full details and prices were published in an article on CNet, in which it was concluded that, at least for the time being, Microsoft is honoring the prices it set for the now-discontinued European version of Win7, which did not contain Internet Explorer 8 and was only available as a full-install edition."

Need a Favor? Talk To My Right Ear 288

Hugh Pickens writes "The Telegraph reports that scientists have found that if you want to get someone to do something, ask them in their right ear. Known as the 'right ear advantage,' scientists believe it is because information received through the right ear is processed by the left hand side of the brain which is more logical and better at deciphering verbal information than the right side of the brain. 'Talk into the right ear you send your words into a slightly more amenable part of the brain,' say researchers. The team, led by Dr. Luca Tommasi and Daniele Marzoli from the University of Chieti in central Italy, observed the behavior of hundreds of people in three nightclubs across the city where they intentionally addressed 176 people in either their right or their left ear when asking for a cigarette. They obtained significantly more cigarettes when they made their request in a person's right ear compared with their left. 'These results seem to be consistent with the hypothesized specialization of right and left hemispheres,' say researchers. 'We can also see this tendency when people use the phone, most will naturally hold it to their right ear.'"

Seriously, has anyone actually paid attention to the stage demo?

Take a look at the first bit with Ridiculous Sunglasses Guy and his avatar - he makes little, uncomplicated poses and the avatar twists itself into pretzels.
It's _extremely_ glitchy.

Then they change to the girl playing ricochet, which is something like 500+ ms lagged and it seems clearly impossible to control with any kind of precision. The lag indicates to me that they are using a tremendous amount of smoothing to try and avoid some serious jitter problems.

It looks like it will fall as short of their glitzy marketing video promise as the wii controller did.
Any game that is not frustrating to control with this technology will basically be playing itself with small cues from you.

I think it's great that there is work being done in these areas, but I am just astounded that so many people are so readily regurgitating the marketing promises for this technology, when they can even demonstrate it halfway convincingly under completely controlled conditions.

Safari 4 Released, Claimed "30 Times Faster Than IE7" 465

CNETNate writes "Apple has released the beta version of Safari 4 for Mac and PC, with claims that its Nitro rendering engine is '30 times faster than IE7,' and three times faster than Firefox 3. Other new features include 'Top Sites,' which shows users the most frequently visited Web pages, 'Full History Search' for searching through not only the URLs and titles of visited pages, but also the complete text within the page itself — something Opera has been doing for a while."

As a game developer myself, I can tell you one of the reasons why game developers often use finite state machines for AI instead of advanced neural networks that employ clever learning machine learning algorithms: It's orders of magnitude easier to analyze and understand (and thus debug and fix) how and why a FSM does what it does than a complicated neural network.

When you're making a game, you want results that are easy to predict and easy to schedule - if you decide to make advanced AI and train the NPC behaviors, it's hard to schedule and very hard to pinpoint and definitively fix a problem where one or more NPCs suddenly start acting extremely strange and un-human. And it's hard to fix if they become to clever.

It's one of those cases where simple models can get you most of the way, and it's more reliable and it's much cheaper to develop (in terms of processing time and implementation time).

First Genetically Modified Human Embryo Under Review 509

Wired is reporting that Cornell University researchers genetically modified a human embryo in 2007, but have only recently been gaining publicity as their work is being reviewed. "The research raises a number of thorny ethical questions. Though adding a fluorescent protein was merely a proof-of-principle step, scientists say that modified embryos could be used to research human diseases. They say embryos wouldn't be allowed to develop for more than a few weeks, much less implanted in a woman and brought to term."

Strict Order Boarding Would Get Planes in the Sky Faster 880

Boarding is a serious issue for airlines, particularly those operating short flights that run several times a day, yet boarding times have steadily increased for decades. Back in 2005 Jason Steffen of the Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois said the method used by many airlines to this day is almost the worst. 'The best way to board, according to the researchers, would be a row-by-row, seat-by-seat, strict order. That would mean everyone lines up, row 25 first. I can't imagine fliers will go for that. Next best, they say, would be boarding all the window seats first, followed by those in the aisle. Obviously that's not practical, at least for couples or families traveling together.'"

First Fossil Evidence That Velociraptors Hunted in Packs 169

Ponca City, We Love You writes "The New Scientist reports that palaeontologists have excavated a fossil trackway in Shandong Province in China 100 to 120 million years old that contains footprints left by six Dromeosaurs, the more formal name for raptors, showing evidence of group behavior. Up until now, the popular stereotype from Jurassic Park of raptors hunting in packs has had no fossil evidence to back it up. The paths of the six 90 kilo raptors do not overlap where the animals walked alongside a river or stream. '"The odds of these tracks being made by different individuals that just happen to be moving in the same direction, without their tracks stepping on one another, are small," said Jerry D. Harris, director of paleontology at Dixie State College. "Groups that do that usually have relatively sophisticated behavior, and they're relatively intelligent," Harris added. "By moving together in groups, it's entirely possible that they hunted in groups."'"

1up is reporting that despite numerous reports of its death, the Halo movie isn't quite completely cancelled ... yet. As far as Fran Walsh, Peter Jackson, and the WETA folks are concerned, things are still just in a holding pattern. "Kamins also shot down both the rumors of a swelling budget and dissatisfaction with Blomkamp. 'The only budget the filmmakers every spoke about was $145 million less the 12.5% rebate that you get from shooting in New Zealand, which would put it at about $128 million,' said [Jackson representative Ken Kamins]. And of the director, Kamins said, 'Everybody is supremely confident in Neall. Part of what excited Peter and Fran was Neill's vision. We're very confident this film will move forward with the creative partners intact, who will take the film to production.'"
