To not let your boss know you're automating is clearly hiding it from them. As an employer, you would want to know just for the mere fact that it's technology that, in theory, could break or go awry, and cause potential business problems. From the employee side, all employee should document what they do and how they do it, at least at a high level. But very few do. But your boss or others should be in the loop when you are automating technology because it could affect others.
