I have no Karma to upvote this, so I'll just say this is one of the most informative comments I've read in a while. I was the layperson of which you spoke until I Googled for a while after reading your comment. I think I read that '5nm' process gate length is usually somewhere around 10nm for most foundries, and the pitch (half distance between features) is actually much larger, around 20nm to 60nm.
One of the proposed marketing strategies is to replace the nm node name versioning scheme with a more standard measure for transistor, memory, and connection density. There are a few hits and papers on the topic if you Google "LMC Density Metric".
