Submission + - Thinking about Rails? Think again (wolfeon.com)

wolfeon writes: "In 2005, Derek Sivers of CD Baby wanted to scrap his site and perform a rewrite in Rails. He hired Jeremy Kemper, also known as bitsweat on Freenode, to help on the project. Two years later, through blood and sweat, the project was then canceled because of limitations of Rails. Rails just wasn't meant to do everything since it is very much "canned" project. Mr. Sivers has written an entry in the O'Reilly blog: 7 reasons I switched back to PHP

This is a fine example of how going for new technology can mean disaster.Anybody who decides to perform a rewrite of any project should invest time to make sure the project will not be scraped... two years later."

Cisco to Kill Linksys Brand Name 262

Mav sent in this article that opens, "In a roundtable with the European press, John Chambers confirmed the "end of life" of the Linksys name, being replaced by the new and redesigned Cisco branding." He explains, "It will all come over time into a Cisco brand. The reason we kept Linksys' brand because it was better known in the US than even Cisco was for the consumer. As you go globally there's very little advantage in that."

Submission + - New Linux desktop environment built on Firefox (pyrodesktop.org)

IL-CSIXTY4 writes: "
Pyro is a new kind of desktop environment for Linux built on Mozilla Firefox. Its goal is to enable true integration between the Web and modern desktop computing.
This looks like an interesting marriage of the web and the desktop. In Pyro, Web apps run in windows on the desktop, right alongside desktop apps (through compositing). Features expected in a desktop environment, like task/window selection and an Expose-like function, are written in Javascript."

Submission + - "new" 7 wonders of the world declared (new7wonders.com)

freakxx writes: ""New" 7 wonders of the worlds have been announced today at Lisbon, Portugal. People throughout the world have voted actively to elect the new 7 out of 21 finalists. As a summery, these are: Chichen Itza, Mexico; Christ Redeemer, Brazil; The Great Wall, China; Machu Picchu, Peru; Petra, Jordan; The Roman Colosseum, Italy; and The Taj Mahal, India. "Pyramids of Giza, Egypt" was the only candidate which also used to be among old 7 wonders before. However, it couldn't make into the list of final 7 and hence we have a complete new set of "seven wonders of the world".

Finally, a question: should the wonders be decided by polling or by a group of experts in this field coming from every part of the world?!"
