Speed is essential. Turning on a machine typically means that you want to use said machine for something. Most of the computers i regularly use takes between 40 and 90 seconds to boot and that is the same time it took 15 years ago. It just doesn't make sense. I think most people agree that a clean boot into a *usable* state really shouldn't take more than 5 to 10 seconds in total. Having a bios that consumes even as little as two seconds of that time doesn't make sense.
