The recent extradition of Australian resident Hew Griffiths (of Drink or Die fame) could set precedence for similarly harsh sentencing of software pirates worldwide, Australian technology lawyer Nick Abrahams predicts in an interview.
"Particularly in the U.S. where the #1 export is intellectual property, they are incredibly vigilant; I see this as the start of more international prosecution for cyber-related crime," he said.
Hew Griffiths faces up to 10 years in a U.S. prison, on top of a hefty fine. This seems a rather harsh punishment for intellectual property theft, especially since the average punishment for rape in the Australian state of Victoria is 6 years and 10 months.
