Submission + - FCC rules that Verizon cannot charge for tethering (zdnet.com)

schleprock63 writes: "The FCC ruled today that Verizon cannot charge extra for users for 4G WiFi tethering. The FCC used the original agreement in the auction of the C block spectrum which said "licensees offering service on C Block spectrum 'shall not deny, limit, or restrict the ability of their customers to use the devices and applications of their choice on the licensee’s C Block network, subject to narrow exceptions". So Verizon cannot charge for tethering on 4G service, this begs the question of whether they can continue to charge for tethering on 3G or 1x?"

Submission + - Fermi Lab discovers new bump (nytimes.com)

schleprock63 writes: "Physicists at Fermi Lab have found a "suspicious bump" in there data that could indicate they've found a new elementary particle or even a new force of nature. The discovery could "be the most significant discovery in physics in half a century". Physicists have ruled out that the particle could be the standard model Higgs boson, but theorize that it could be some new and unexpected version of the Higgs. This discovery comes as the Tevatron is slated to go offline sometime in September."

Submission + - cell phone searches require warrant (nytimes.com)

schleprock63 writes: The Ohio state supreme court has decided that a cell phone found on a suspect cannot be searched without a warrant, http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2009/12/15/us/AP-US-Cell-Phone-Searches.html. The majority has based this decision on a federal case which deemed that a cell phone is not a "closed container" and cannot be searched. The argument contended that a cell phone does not contain physical objects and therefore is not a container.

So, what about those C++ containers, like vectors, lists ... that I'm sure are part of the code base for the phone. One dissenting judge argued that a cell phone is a container that simply contains data. He argued that the other judges were ''needlessly theorizing" about the contents of a cell phone. He compared the data contained within an address book that would be search-able.

So, what do slash dotters think? Is a cell phone simply an address book? Is it merely a container? Or is it something more, like a laptop, which does require a warrant to search?

NASA

Submission + - Endeavour's Launch Delayed

schleprock63 writes: Nasa has delayed the launch of Endeavour due to inclement weather, mostly lightning. According to NASA "Officials at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida have called off today's liftoff of space shuttle Endeavour due to inclement weather. Cumulus clouds and lightning violated rules for launching Endeavour because of weather near the Shuttle Landing Facility. The runway would be needed in the unlikely event that Endeavour would have to make an emergency landing back at Kennedy. Endeavour's next launch attempt is 6:51 p.m. EDT Monday. NASA TV coverage will begin at 1:30 p.m."
